All schools employ cleaners and sometimes the importance of thorough cleaning is lost on the people doing the job. Dirt and dust left not swept can cause health issues - not just with children and teacher who are asthmatic bit can also effect others. In our visits we came across one school where the headteacher put absenteeism down to lack of proper cleaning. This is especially true where there are wooden and lino flooring. On the face of it may appear to be clean but these type of surfaces collect the most dust.
So what's our recommendation?
Head or deputy should always make periodic rounds to check that premises are being cleaned properly as no one can judge standards better than the people at the top. A quick walk around the school once a month can prevent poor performing cleans and make that small difference to the attendance rate.
